Eminent film director Amjad Hossain no more

Eminent film director Amjad Hossain died at a Bangkok hospital in Thailand today at the age of 80.

“He (Amjad Hossain) breathed his last at the Bamrungrad Hospital in the Thai capital at 2.57 pm Bangladesh time,” Sajjad Hossain Dodul, eldest son of the deceased, told BSS.

Amjad Hossain, who won the Ekushey Padak and the National Film Award, left behind his wife, four sons and a daughter and a host of relatives and admirers to mourn his death.

He suffered a stroke at his residence in the capital on November 18 and was shifted to Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok for better treatment, Dodul said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had taken the responsibility for the treatment of Amjad Hossain.

She donated Taka 42.35 lakh for Amjad Hossain’s treatment abroad.

Amjad won the Bangladesh National Film Award in Best Director category twice – for the films “Golapi Ekhon Traine” (1978) and “Bhat De” (1984).

He directed a number of films including Agun Niye Khela in 1967, Julekha in 1967, Balyo Bandhu in 1968, Pitaputra in 1970, Koshai in 1980, Abar Tora Manush Hoin 1973, Nayanmoni in 1976, Golapi Ekhon Traine in 1978, Sundori in 1979 and Bhat Dey in 1984.

He was born at Iqbalpur village in Jamalpur Sadar upazila on August 14 in 1942.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Amjad Hossain.

In a condolence message, the premier recalled Amjad Hossain’s outstanding contributions to the country’s film industry, saying that his death is an irreparable loss to the industry.

He will be remembered forever for his works, she said.

Sheikh Hasina prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family.

In another condolence message, Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury also expressed deep shock at the death of Amjad Hossain and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul.
