Final decision in stripping Ziaur Rahman of ‘Bir Uttam’ title soon

A final decision will be taken soon to strip Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) founder and former president Ziaur Rahman of his ‘Bir Uttam’ gallantry title.

Jatiya Muktijoddha Council (JMC) has formed a three-member committee to take a final decision in this regard soon.

JMC chief Mosharraf Hossain MP will lead the committee. Other members of the committee are Mosharraf Hossain MP, Shajahan Khan MP and Md Rashidul Alam MP.

Contacted, head of the committee Mosharraf Hossain MP said Ziaur Rahman was “directly involved in Bangabandhu murder. It can’t be accepted that such a person will continue to hold gallantry title. Because of it, decision has been taken to strip him of his title. Now, we’re just waiting to announce the formalities in this regard.”

Earlier, the JMC decided to strip Ziaur Rahman of his gallantry title citing him as the instigator of Bangabandhu murder. If Ziaur Rahman’s title is stripped off 50 years after the country’s independence, he will also be deprived of all the facilities provided to his family by the state.

Besides, the name of Khondker Moshtaque Ahmed will be dropped from the list of memmorable persons.

Moreover, stripping the titles of Bangabandhu’s self-declared killers–Shariful Huque Dalim, Noor Chowdhury, Rashed Chowdhury and Mosleh Uddin–have also been proposed.

The above mentioned decisions were taken at the 72nd meeting of Jatiya Muktijoddha Council held at Scout Bhaban in the capital on February 9 last. The JMC will send its decisions to the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs now. Then the ministry concerned will publish the decisions in the form of a gazette notification.

On the website of the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, there was a list of gallantry titles receipient freedom fighters. In the list, ‘Bir Uttam’ was mentioned with the name of Shariful Huque Dalim, ‘Bir Bikram’ with the name of Noor Chowdhury, ‘Bir Pratik’ with the name of Rashed Chowdhury, and ‘Bir Pratik’ with the name of Mosleh Uddin.

The meeting of JMC was attended by Engineer Mosharraf Hossain MP, Shahjahan Khan MP, Vice-Principal Dr M Abdus Shahid, Md Motahar Hossain, Md Shahiduzzaman Sarker and Bir Muktijoddha Rashidul Alam and Maj (Retd) Waqar Hasan Bir Protik.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is the adviser to the Jatiya Muktijoddha Council.
