Final Hajj rituals begin Tuesday

21 Septembar 2015, Nirapad News: Some two million Muslim pilgrims are set to begin the annual Hajj pilgrimage on Tuesday by pouring into the Plain of Arafat near the holy city of Makkah in Saudi Arabia.

The pilgrims, shrouded in white plain garments, will spend most of the day in areas near Mount Arafat, praying to God and asking for forgiveness.

Arafat Day, on the 9th of Jhil Hajj, is the climax of the hajj season. Pilgrims gather on the hill known as Mount Arafat, and its surrounding plain, where they remain until evening for prayer and Koran recitals.

Prophet Mohammed is believed to have delivered his final hajj sermon there.

After sunset on the 9th of Jhul Hajj, pilgrims leave for Muzdalifah, half-way between Arafat and Mina, where they stay at least until midnight. They gather pebbles to perform the symbolic “stoning of the devil”.

Later in the day, the pilgrims will leave Arafat and move to the plains of Mina to conduct the rest of the rituals.

The peak of the rites – Eid al-Azha – will fall on Thursday. The Eid is perceived to be one of the most important days in Islam.

The major Hajj is performed during a five-day period from the 8th through the 12th of Jhu al-Hajj, the last month of the Muslim lunar calendar.

A total of 101,657 Bangladeshis will perform the Hajj this year.
