First Water taxi introduced in Hatirjheel
20 December 2016, Nirapad News: The first water taxi service has been launched on 16th December in Hatirjheel to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the Victory Day.
The water transport system aims to ease travelling and provide greater connectivity. Minister of Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal inaugurated the taxi service at Merul-Badda terminal on Friday afternoon. He took the first ride on a water taxi after the inauguration ceremony. Rajuk Chairman M Bazlul Karim Chaudhury, Hatirjheel project officials, Bangladesh Army Engineering Corps and representatives of the water taxi Karim Group attended the ceremony.
The event drew a huge crowd, all eager to ride the first water taxi service in Dhaka.
Minister Kamal said: “In this city of concrete and steel, Hatirjheel is an oasis for the residents. I hope the new taxi service will make the lake and its surrounding areas more appealing to the urban residents.”
“I urge Karim Group to be patient with the taxi service. The company might not make a profit in their first or second quarters, but the project will be profitable in the long-run,” he added.
As part of a large project, another set of water taxis are scheduled to be introduced to the Gulshan-Banani-Baridhara Lake very soon.
Each taxi costs around Tk 85 lakh and can carry 45 passengers. The fare is around Tk 25-30 for a single trip, subject to future change.
Although the water taxi project was supposed to be fully implemented by 2010, it was delayed several times. Finally, it began operating in December 2016 to meet the deadline set by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council.
