Forest Department starts work in Sundarbans to assess damages

Bangladesh Forest Department (BFD) has started work in the Sundarbans to assess the damages caused by the cyclonic storm “Bulbul” to the world’s largest mangrove forest.

“Employees of 63 camps of the Bangladesh Forest Department are working in the Sundarbans to assess the trail of devastation left behind by cyclone Bulbul . . We will get a primary idea about the damage in the next two or three days,” said Divisional Forest Officer (East) Mahmudul Hasan.

He said tourists were not allowed to visit Sundarbans today.

Besides the forest, some camps, pontoons, walkways and jetties were damaged in the cyclone but there was no report of deaths of wildlife so far, he added.
