12 April 2016, Nirapad News: Speakers at a post-rally discussion in Rajshahi observed that forging social resistance could be the effective means of uprooting corruption from the society as prevention of the corrupts is very vital socially.

They viewed that time has come to become unite against all sorts of corruptions and involving community people is imperative to this end. Ensuring open and timely access to information will help stop corruption, improve governance and increase accountability and transparency, they added.

They said coordinated efforts should be taken at individual and institution levels for proper implementation of the Right to Information (RTI) law.

They were addressing the inaugural session of a daylong Information Fair and Public Hearing-2016 at Charghat Upazila Parishad complex in the district yesterday. Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) and Transparency International (TIB) jointly organised the event to intensify the anti corruption campaign.

ACC Commissioner Dr Nasir Uddin addressed the discussion session as chief guest with Upazila Nirbahi Officer-in-Charge Zakiul Islam in the chair.

ACC Director Md Muniruzzaman, Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Kazi Ashraf Uddin, SP Nisharul Arif, Upazila Chairman Abu Sayeed Chand, Pourasava Mayor Jakirul Islam and TIB Senior Programme Manager Kazi Shafiqur Rahman, among others, also spoke.

Chief Guest Nasir Uddin said proactive disclosure of information regarding budgetary allocation for development work at grassroots can ensure proper utilisation of resources and put a check on corruption.

He said a culture of seeking information should be developed in society, especially for the grassroots-level people, for effective implementation of the RTI law.

RTI law would not leave any benefit unless it is properly implemented through creating awareness among mass people about their right of access to information, Dr Nasir added.

Once RTI is properly implemented, it would take the country a step forward to ensure good governance as well as administrative transparency and accountability. He stressed the need for a strong role of the media in educating common people on appropriate methods of exercising their right.

He laid importance on creation of awareness among the mass people, especially the young generation, to eliminate corruption from the society. Concerted effort is crucially important to check corruption.
