Govt puts efforts in boosting fish production

15 August 2015, Nirapad News: The present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has put huge efforts in boosting fish production through proper utilisation of water bodies to attain self-reliance and meeting nutritional demand.

Member of the Parliament from reserved constituency Advocate Hosne Ara Lutfa Dalia said this while addressing a fingerling release ceremony organised by Sadar Upazila Fisheries Department on the Upazila parishad premises on Friday afternoon.

The Lawmaker also released 60 kilogram carp variety fish fries into the Upazila parishad pond as the chief guest on the occasion.

Sadar upazila chairman Nasima Zaman Bobby, District Fisheries Officer Dr Zillur Rahman, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ziaur Rahman, Awami League leaders M Jahangir Alam Bakhsi, Emdadul Haque Dulu and Mokbul Hossain and Sadar Upazila Statistics Officer Swattik Shah Al Maruf were present.

Presided over by Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Mahfuzar Rahman, government officials, leaders of AL and its associate organisations, local public representatives, civil society members, journalists and elite attended the ceremony.

The fish fries were released under a comprehensive programme of releasing fingerlings by the Upazila Fisheries Department to water bodies including flood plains, submerged rice fields, ponds and ‘beels’ for boosting fish production.

The speakers said the government has been distributing free fish fries among fishermen and farmers through different departments and organisations to enhance fish production for improving rural livelihoods through eradicating poverty.

The chief guest put importance on bringing all ponds, tinny water bodies, flood plains, ‘beels’, ‘haors’ and flood plains under fish cultivation using latest technologies ensuring best use of all existing natural resources.

Narrating prospect of the fisheries sector, she stressed on boosting fish production along with protecting natural breeding grounds, stopping catch of smaller fishes to preserve extinct and indigenous fish species to achieve self-reliance by the rural people.

She also called for strengthening the hands of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to further accelerate the pace of development in the process of building a developed “Sonar Bangla” as dreamt by Father of the Nation
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
