Government seeks stay on Gaibandha MP’s surrender
13 October 2015, Nirapad News: The government has filed a petition with the Supreme Court (SC) seeking stay on the High Court order that asked Gaibandha-1 MP Manjurul Islam Liton to surrender before a lower court by October 18 in a case filed for shooting a nine-year-old boy.
The petition was filed on Tuesday with the bench of Chamber Judge Syed Mahmud Hossain.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told the reporters that the hearing on the petition is likely to be held this afternoon.
The AG said that the petition was filed so that law enforcers could arrest the lawmaker immediately after the stay order.
Rejecting the Awami League lawmaker’s bail prayer, the High Court on Monday asked him to surrender before a trial court by October 18 in the case.
A two-member HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Bhishmadev Chakraborty passed the order.
Liton also faces charges of looting and vandalism in another case.
On October 2, nine-year-old boy Sourav was shot in his legs when Liton opened fire.
