Government to remove city’s waterlogging permanently: Khandaker Mosharraf
08 December 2015, Nirapad News: LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Engineer Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said the government has taken short-term and long-term steps to remove the waterlogging problem of the city permanently by ensuring smooth sewerage and drainage system and freeing 13 out of 46 canals from illegal encroachments.
A committee, headed by an additional secretary of the ministry, comprising representatives of Dhaka WASA, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), RAJUK and local leaders has been formed to work for removing longstanding waterlogging in the capital,” he told journalists.
The minister was addressing a press conference after a meeting with the officials of his ministry, and representatives of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA), Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakhkha (RAJUK) and Deputy Commissioner’s office of Dhaka this afternoon.
Replying to a query, Engineer Mosharraf said the government would make coordinated efforts to remove waterlogging, and all influential persons of different areas of the two city corporations including people’s representatives would be involved in the committee.
The committee will help the authorities concerned to permanently free the water bodies in the city from illegal encroachment and remove unplanned construction of apartment blocks and also keep the box culverts clean.
DNCC Mayor Md Annisul Huq, LGRD Secretary Abdul Malek, Managing Director of Dhaka WASA Engineer Taskin A Khan, Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Tofazzel Hossain and concerned high officials were present in the meeting, among others.
