Governments appoints new bank division secretary

16 March 2016, Nirapad News: Government named Md Eunusur Rahman as the new secretary to the bank and financial institutions division of the finance ministry.

This appointment followed ongoing reshuffles in banking sector, amid the spate of resignation and removal of officials over the cyber heist of the Bangladesh bank Fed Reserve account leading to loss of $80 million.

Rahman’s predecessor M Aslam Alam is attached to the public administration ministry as an officer on special duty (OSD).

On Tuesday, Atiur Rahman stepped down as Bangladesh Bank governor after days of calls for his head for concealing even from the government the news of $81 million funds being stolen from Bangladesh Bank’s reserves.

After the central bank chief’s resignation, the government fired two deputy governors— Nazneen Sultana and Md Abul Quasem before Finance Minister AMA Muhith broke the news of replacing the banking division secretary.

The banking division secretary is on the board of the Bangladesh Bank. Rahman, who will replace Aslam, is serving as member of the Privatization Board. He also served as the secretary to the agriculture ministry and as the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation chairman.
