Hasina-Modi to launch Dhaka-Jalpaiguri train on March 26

A direct passenger train between Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka and New Jalpaiguri in India is expected to start operating from 26 March next.

The train will run directly from Kamlapur in Dhaka to New Jalpaiguri Rail Junction in India on the Chilahati-Haldibari route to mark the 50th anniversary of independence, said Bangladesh Railway in a press release on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are expected to inaugurate it during Modi’s visit to Dhaka on March 26 marking the 50th anniversary celebration of Bangladesh’s independence. At that time, a new direct trans-national passenger train between Kamlapur in Dhaka and New Jalpaiguri Rail Junction in India will start plying on the Chilahati-Haldibari route. And, it will jointly be inaugurated by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The train’s arrival and departure timings, fares, immigration and name will be decided through discussions at the official level of the Railways Ministries of two countries.
