26 February 2015, Nirapad News: On Wednesday, High Court asked the relevant authorities if price hike has been cleared for life-saving drugs. The bench of Justice Md Rezaul Hasan and Justice Farid Ahmed issued orders to this effect on a writ petition by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.
The court asked the chief of Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection to submit a report mentioning the market prices and supposed prices of life-saving medicines, rates of price hike and if there was any permission for the rise.
It also ordered the National Drug Advisory Council to submit a gazette in seven days fixing the maximum retail prices of the drugs.
The court instructed Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection and Directorate General of Drug Administration to present reports on their actions on drug price hikes over last five years.
On Jan 12, the High Court had issued a rule on the Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh petition. In that rule, the court had asked why drug price hikes would not be declared illegal. The health secretary was made respondent to the rule.
