Illegal occupation challenges to water management system: Minister

22 March 2016, Nirapad News: Water Resources Minister Barrister Aminul Islam Mahmud today said illegal occupation is a big challenge to maintain proper water management system.

“Our population is large and illegal occupation on embankment and flood roof areas is a big challenge to maintain water management system,” he said.

“LGRD ministry constructing roads and other infrastructure on flood roof areas which should not be uses for any other purposes,” he added.

He was speaking as the chief guest at a discussion to observe the World Water Day at seminar hall of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Council Building in the city.

Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDC), Water Resources Planning Agency, Institute of Water Modeling, Bangladesh National Committee of ICID (BANCID), Bangladesh Water Partnership and BUET jointly organised the programme aims to inform, engage and inspire water related actions.

Director General of BWDB and Chairman of BANCID Engineer M Masud Ahmed presided over the programme.

The theme of the Day ‘Water and Jobs’ is focusing on how enough quantity and quality of water can change workers’ lives and livelihoods and even transform societies and economies.

Emphasizing to strengthen the country’s law for proper water management system the minister said “At present, almost 1.5 billion people work in water-related sectors globally and nearly all jobs depend on the availability of freshwater.

“The government has started 139 projects at the Southern part of the country to face any kind of water based natural calamity like Aila and Sidr” he added.

Professor of BUET Dr M Abdul Matin and President of Bangladesh Water Partnership Dr Khandker Azharul Huq presented the key note papers.

Secretary of the ministry Dr Zafor Ahmed khan also spoke on the occasion.
