Illegal sand lifting causes massive erosion in Tangail

10 November 2015, Nirapad News: Due to illegal sand lifting by an influential quarter from the rivers- Elengzani, Louhajang and Dhaleswari that are crisscrossing Delduar upazila of the district, massive erosion has started.

The important Shahdharipara-Moista road and different establishments including a vast area of croplands have already gone into the rivers.

It was gathered that an influential corner under the support of ruling party is earning lakhs of taka by lifting sand with ‘bangla dredger’ and selling those illegally. But, administration is deaf to the matter which has triggered the illegal practice. As a result, flow of water in the rivers is changing courses, and locals are becoming subject to multifarious losses.

Recently, panic gripped inhabitants of Lalhara village under Delduar upazila due to the large scale erosion. Locals informed that earlier a vested quarter lifted sand illegally from the the river banks with ‘bangla dredger’. As a result, huge areas of Kalabagan and Kathalbagan have gone into river, locals added.

On the other hand, around 50,000 people of Shahdharipara, Elachipur, Kamanna, Armoista, Dhanki and Kumarjani areas use the important Shahdharipara-Moista road regularly, But due to the erosion, some riverside houses and croplands have gone into river.

Nurul Islam, 60, of Shadharipara said, “We are facing setback since the road has been damaged. We demand immediate steps to repair the road so that people as well as students of the areas can use it like before.”

Delduar Upazila Parishad Chairman SM Ferdous Ahmed said, “One portion of the road has been damaged. Besides, some houses and croplands have also been destroyed. We will take necessary steps soon.”
