Increase funding to women entrepreneurs: Atiur
10 March 2016, Nirapad News: Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Dr Atiur Rahman on Wednesday advised commercial banks to increase funding to women entrepreneurs with innovative strategies and diverse products.
The governor came up with the advice while addressing a seminar on the role of SME loan to develop women entrepreneurship in the city. He said the central bank will provide necessary support to implement the BB’s policy guidelines for funding women entrepreneurs.
He also inaugurated the Women Entrepreneur Fair 2016 at the Bangladesh Bank Training Institute (BBTA) in Mirpur. Bangladesh Bank organised the seminar and the fair on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
Dr Rahman, however, said banks and financial institutions have already provided women entrepreneurs with increased funding.
According to him, last year all banks and financial institutions disbursed Tk 1 lakh 15 thousand 870 crore among 7 lakh 25 thousand entrepreneurs. Of the amount, Tk 4 thousand 227 crore was provided to 1 lakh 25 thousand women entrepreneurs.
He said women should be more involved with the mainstream economic activities by facilitating them with financial and other necessary supports.
BB deputy governors SK Sur Chowdhury and Nazneen Sultana and Director General of Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management Dr Taufiq Ahmed Chowdhury and BBTA Principal KM Jamsheduzzaman also spoke at the seminar, chaired by BB Executive Director Nirmol Chanrda Bhakta, according to a news agency.
