19 August 2016, Nirapad News: New Delhi has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dhaka to use 140 kilometres of Bangladesh territory from Tamabil, Sylhet to Chatlapur in Moulvibazar for carrying petroleum products from Assam to Tripura, the two Indian states, on a temporary basis.

The MoU was signed between Bangladesh Roads and Highways Department and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) here yesterday.

Foreign Ministry sources said Bangladesh, based on the request of Indian government, has granted the permission for the movement of petroleum goods on humanitarian grounds through the territory of Bangladesh till September 30, 2016.

Trucks carrying the petroleum goods will ply the Dawki (Meghalaya)- Tamabil (Bangladesh) – Chatlapur (Bangladesh) – Kailasshar (Tripura) route, IOCL sources said.

Heavy monsoon rains and the extremely bad road condition of national highway have resulted in the disruption in the supply of petroleum goods from the State of Assam to the State of Tripura in India, they added.

However, Bangladesh foreign ministry in a press statement said that Bangladesh government has given permission to India to use its territory for a certain period of time on humanitarian grounds and considering the exiting Dhaka-New Delhi ties as well as Bangladesh’s historic relations with the people of the Indian State of Tripura.

According to the MoU, the Indian side has agreed to conduct maintenance works on the roads while carrying their goods.

Additional Chief Engineer of Roads and Highways Department and Executive Director of IOCL signed the MoU on behalf of their respected sides at the ministry of foreign affairs.

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh and senior officials of the ministry of foreign affairs and IOCL, among others, were present on the occasion.
