Jatiya Sangsad body visits Payra seaport site
17 May 2015, Nirapad News: A delegation of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Shipping Ministry led by its Chairman Major (retd) Rafiqul Islam, Bir Uttam, today visited the site of under construction Payra seaport, that will be the 3rd seaport of the country.
The other members of the delegation were members of the committee Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan, Anwarul Azim, Advocate Nurul Islam Suja, Abdul Khaleq Talukdar and Advocate Momtaz.
Rafiqul Islam told BSS that the Payra seaport has huge potential as it has adequate area to accommodate four to five ships at a time. “The depth of the water is eight miters and at some areas it is 10 miters. For that any ship can enter the port area easily,” he said.
Shahjahan Khan said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has chosen the right place for building the third seaport. “The construction work is going on in a good pace as it is under the fast track project criteria. We are hoping ships can enter the port by this year,” he said.
The minister said the new port will be in full operation by 2018 and power plant, container terminal, EPZ will be established here by 2023.
He hoped Payra seaport will bring vital change in the economy of southern part of the country.
