Jute mill workers block Khulna-Jessore highway
10 February 2016, Nirapad News: Workers of state-owned Alim Jute Mill put blockade on Khulna- Jessore highway and railway in Atra industrial area of Khulna district on Wednesday (February 10) to press their several point demands.
The demands include — stopping the process of privatization of the mill, starting the production by purchasing jute
and payment of the arrears wage.
As a part of pre-announced demonstration, hundreds of workers started strike from 9:00am on Wednesday, taking
position on Khulna-Jessore highway.
Alim Jute Mills CBA (Collective Bargaining Agent) president Abdus Salam Jomaddar informed banglanews that the
demonstration will continue till 3.00pm.
Protesting workers said if the administration tries to obstruct this peaceful blockade, they would be forced to
continue the protest for their livelihood.
Mill protection committee convener and also CBA general secretary Mohammad Abdur Rashid, former CBA president
Mohammad Saiful Lithu and the general secretary Abdul Hamid Sarkar and others joined the protest program.
However, Alim Jute Mill was founded on July 1 in 1968 as a private organization. Later in 1972, following the order
of the then president of the country, the mill was declared state-owned and since then it had been running under the
supervision of Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC).
