Kamaruzzaman files review petition with Supreme Court
05 March 2015, Nirapad News: Assistant Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami, M Kamaruzzaman, also incumbent on Thursday filed a petition with the Supreme Court seeking review of its judgment upholding the death sentence awarded by the trial court for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
Confirming the filing of the review plea with the relevant section of the Appellate Division, barrister Shishir Manir, the counsel for the condemned convict, that they have submitted the paper book, an abstract of all the facts of the case along with the judgments, containing 704 pages that includes a 45-page petition mentioning 44 grounds for review.
Referring to the rules, counsel Shishir further said the review petition will be heard on priority basis.
After officially receiving the full text of the judgment of the Appellate Division that was released on February 18, the review petition was filed as per the court rules.
Meanwhile, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told reporters that the execution of Kamaruzzaman’s death warrant, issued by the trial court on February 19, stands inoperative since the review plea has been filed.
On May 9, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal -2 condemned Jamaat-e-Islami assistant secretary general M Kamaruzzaman, a 1971 operator of infamous Al Badr vigilante outfit, to death for his crimes against humanity, including murder, abduction, torture, rape and mass killing during the Liberation War.
On November 3 last year, the Supreme Court upheld the tribunal’s the death sentence.
