Khaleda declares non-stop countrywide blockade
05 January 2015, Nirapad News :BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia called a non-stop nationwide blockade for an indefinite period starting from Tuesday. She announced the fresh agitation plan after failing to get out of her office amid heavy police presence on the anniversary of the last national elections. Addressing reporters from the lawn of her Gulshan office where she has been confined since Saturday night. Khaleda, also the leader of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, called upon the coalition supporters to take to the streets and enforce the blockade of roads, railways and waterways across Bangladesh until further notice. She alleged that not only she, the entire country has been besieged by law enforcers since Saturday night. She said that an uneasy situation is prevailing in the country. The opposition leaders and activists are being arrested indiscriminately and oppressed inhumanly. Addressing the journalists, the BNP chief said that she had remained confined to her political office since 11:40pm on Saturday. ‘I came down to the main gate of the office around 3:48pm today (Monday) in a bid to get out of it, but could not as police kept the gate under lock and key, she said, asking through the journalists as to why the police have besieged her. She said that democracy has been killed in the country. People have no rights to speak. Media are being closed down one after another. She alleged that Ekushey TV, a private television station, has been shut for airing the speeches of BNP leaders. She also asked the government through the journalists when the police will let her come out of the office. She alleged that people are getting killed while at home and kidnapped when outside it. There is no law and order. Murders, attacks, enforced disappearances and police harassments are order of the day, alleged the BNP leader, according to a news agency.
