Khaleda Zia to sit with senior BNP leaders on EC matters tonight
06 February 2017, Nirapad News: BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia is going to sit with her party’s standing committee members on Monday night. She is likely to discuss the country’s latest situation and the election commission formation as the search committee is going to recommend 10 names to the president for appointing new election commissioners.
The meeting is scheduled to start around 8:30pm at the BNP chief’s Gulshan office, her media wing member Sayrul Kabir Khan told Sunday night.
Contacted, a BNP standing committee member wishing anonymity said the meeting was convened to discuss the country’s current political situation and the formation of the new EC. He said they will work out the party’s strategy on how to face the situation if an acceptable and neutral EC is not formed.
The meeting is also likely to discuss the party’s plan for presenting a proposal before the nation about an election-time government to assist the EC to ensure a fair and acceptable national election.
The BNP policymaker said their party’s greater focus is on making an arrangement for an election-time government than the EC. “If the EC is formed with controversial persons, it won’t only be acceptable to people, but also make our demand for election-time supportive government stronger.”
After the formation of the new EC, he said, their chairperson Khaleda Zia will place a proposal on formation of an election-time supportive government to drum up public support in favour of it.
“If the EC is not formed as per people’s hopes and aspirations, we’ll launch our movement very shortly after the announcement of the Commission. If an acceptable EC is constituted, we’ll follow the go-slow policy,” the BNP leader said.
On 25 January, president Abdul Hamid formed a six-member search committee, headed by justice Syed Mahmud Hassan, for constituting the next EC as the tenure of the current one expires in next week. Abdul Hamid will appoint no more than five persons to the EC from the names to be proposed by the search committee.
