Khaleda Zia’s arrest could destabilise country
“In Bangladesh an anti-corruption court issued an arrest warrant for BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. If the warrant is executed, it could seriously escalate the political crisis,” the ICG said in its monthly conflict situation report CrisisWatch released on March 2.
The Brussels-based group also said: “The crisis could gravely destabilize the country unless both the government and the BNP move urgently to reduce tensions [as explained in the new report].”
On February 2, the Crisis Group said the first anniversary of Bangladesh’s disputed January 2014 elections saw dozens killed in clashes between government and opposition groups, and marked the start of a new phase of the political deadlock between the ruling Awami League and opposition BNP.
The warrant was issued against the three-time former Prime Minister on February 25 as she skipped hearings in two graft cases repeatedly.
