Locals attack high school in Rajshahi as teacher cane students
Rajshahi , 29 March 2015, Nirapad News: Angry guardians and locals attacked a high school in Bagha upazila on Saturday after a teacher caned 42 class-VIII students for their failure to pay subscriptions for annual picnic.
Police said assistant teacher Mohammad Ali of Chandipur High School beat the 42 students as they declined to go for the picnic after paying Tk 100 as subscription. Many of the students fell ill after the caning.
As the news spread around, locals and guardians of the students stormed the school. They attacked headmaster Narzul Islam when he tried to quell them, leaving him injured. The angry mob also confined three teachers, including Mohammad Ali, to a room.
On information, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Badal Chandra Halder and police rushed in and rescued them.
In the face of demand from the guardians, Mohammad submitted his resignation. Later, police took him to the police station and the injured headmaster to the Upazila Health Complex.
Talking to reporters at the hospital, the headmasters termed the incident unexpected.
Officer-in-Charge of Bagha Police Station Aminur Rahman said they detained the accused teacher.
