Loss of Tk 75,000 crore due to blockades, FBCCI
9 February 2015, Nirapad News: The economic loss to the countrywide ceaseless blockade and recurring shutdowns would be no less than Taka 75,000 crore, said the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI).
Reading out a statement here today at the street protest against the BNP-Jamaat’s political anarchy, FBCCI president Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed said the blockade and the hartal put the fate of the prospective economy and future of millions in an uncertain state.
According to the statement, the major losers were the apparel sector with Taka 30,000 crore, wholesale and retail business with Taka 15,000 crore, agriculture and poultry with Taka 9,518 crore, transport sector with Taka 9,500 crore, tourism with Taka 6,500 crore and frozen foods with Taka 250 crore.
Ahmed said no business could survive with incurring such huge losses, which would also cause unrecoverable dent to the national economy.
The FBCCI chief demanded a total ban on blockades & shutdowns and waiver of interests of businesses, badly affected by the political violence.
