15 March 2015, Nirapad News: Alleging that he had been tortured while in remand, Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna has asked not to be interrogated in the custody of the Detective Branch of police (DB), his family said yesterday.

Manna, who has been shown arrested in a sedition case, asked to be interrogated at the Jail gate instead, told his family.

Manna is currently undergoing treatment at the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after falling sick on Tuesday on the fourth day of the second phase of a 10-day remand in DB custody.

DB Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam denied the allegation of torture, saying the DMCH medical board did not find any injury marks on his body. Detective sources said once Manna’s health improves, they will appeal to the court to interrogate him again.

Meher Nigar, Manna’s wife, told yesterday that Manna became sick during a remand session.

“He had been suffering from high blood pressure before his arrest and Manna mentioned it on the first day of his appearance before the court,” Monirul said. DMCH cardiologists have found three blocks in his arteries.

“If the interrogation continues, his psychical condition will deteriorate further. Doctors have advised that he be provided with a healthier diet for his health to improve,” Meher said.

A relative of Manna’s wife, requesting not to be named, told that Manna’s psychological condition had improved.

“His blood pressure is under control but he is still having chest pains. Doctors have sent blood samples to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) for examination,” she added.

A close associate of Manna’s, who was at the hospital, yesterday said Manna doubted whether voters would be able to meaningfully exercise the franchise.

Manna feared that opposition party candidates might not be able to contest the polls because mass arrests were still being made, he said.

But Manna wants to participate in the polls after getting bail, Manna’s associate, who asked not to be named, said.

Manna told his relatives he did not say anything that went against the state or the army while speaking with BNP leader Sadeque Hossain Khoka on Viber.

He claimed he had asked Khoka to get the BNP off its violent path, his relatives said.

Manna was arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion in front of Star Kabab in the capital’s Dhanmondi neighbourhood on February 24.
