Mass awareness for reducing road crash stressed
7 October 2015, Nirapad News: Speakers at a views exchange meeting on the role of local level authorities for road safety stressed the need for creating mass-awareness and strict enforcement of traffic rules for reducing road accident that claimed around 4,000 lives and injured over 5,000 every year in the country.
They also viewed that road accident could have been reduced substantially if the authorities concerned discharged duties properly while providing driving licenses and fitness certificates. If the drivers, helpers, members of the law enforcement agencies and pedestrians obey the traffic rules properly in discharging their duties many road accidents could be avoided, they opined.
BRAC, under its Advocacy for Social change and road safety programme with the cooperation of district administration organized the meeting at Deputy Commissioner office conference room here on Tuesday.
A total of 35 participants including officials of Sadar upazila parishad, leaders of transport owners association, transport workers association, journalists and others took part in the meeting
Mijanur Rahman, district representative of BRAC presented the welcome speech while GM Reza Suman, social communicator of BRAC advocacy for social change and road safety programme presented the key note address on the role of local level on road safety and mentioned the main causes of road accident.
Deputy Commissioner of Narsingdi Abu Hena Morshed Zaman addressed the meeting as chief guest with Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education and ICT) Khandaker Nural Hoque in the chair.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (general) Suriaya Begum, Additional police super Zakir Hossain addressed as special guests.
The chief guest Abu Hena Morshed Zaman said raod accident is a manmade disaster in Bangladesh. He said the government has taken comprehensive steps to reduce road accident by 50 percent within 2020 and has taken various measures.
He said BRAC, the non government organization, also working on road safety since 2001 through various program for helping government programs in reducing road accident.
