Massive irregularities in low-cost rice distribution found by the food Minister
18 October 2016, Nirapad News: Minister Qamrul Islam has admitted occurrence of massive irregularities in distribution of low-cost rice among the ultra poor.
“The food aid programme had been undertaken for abject poor. But, massive anomalies were found in preparing the list of actual poor. Dealers have also been found adopting anomalies during rice distribution. The grim picture was obtained during the visit by the food inspector,” said the minister at a press briefing held at the Secretariat on Tuesday.
Informing that the government has already taken steps against those found guilty, Quamrul Islam said that dealerships of 44 dealers have been cancelled while 11 criminal cases were filed.
Sounding a note of warning, he said, “We’ve fulfilled our pledge to distribute rice at a cost of Tk 10 per kg among the abject poor. But, the programme is being hindered. Action will be taken against those found guilty irrespective of party affiliations.”
The minister also hoped that the rice price would come down within a week.
