Media must criticize with responsibility: Inu
10 June 2015, Nirapad News: Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, MP, today told a gathering that journalists have the responsibility to criticize the government with due diligence.
“We are aware of the critical role of the media in a democracy but we are also aware what irresponsibility can do,” he said.
Elaborating further he reiterated that his government was committed to democracy and that they welcomed criticism although they were aware that certain pests and insects would enter through any open window.
“Nevertheless we will not close the window,” he added.
“Rather”, he added “the media should take responsibility for clearing the air, every day.” “And it will become more transparent with the development of democracy,” he said.
“We want the media to be objective but on certain fundamental issues like the Liberation War, democracy and social peace we have no choice but to be partisan,” the minister added.
In the same breath, he said “Democracy and militancy cannot go together, neither can Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and subversive Khaleda Zia, who the other day was engaged in killing people with petrol bombs,” he added.
The minister was speaking at a meeting organized by a regional daily “Noakhali Protidin” on its third founding anniversary and was chaired by the chief of its editorial board, Md Nasiruddin.
Among others, Ekramul Karim Chowdhury, MP, also spoke on the occasion.
