6 March 2017, Nirapad News: Interns at several medical colleges and hospitals called off their programme on Monday following withdrawal of suspension order of their four fellows of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College (SZMC) in Bogra, reports UNB.

The decision came after an emergency meeting held between health minister Mohammad Nasim and the representatives of interns at his residence in Dhaka in the morning, said Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) secretary general Iqbal Arsalan.

Leaders of interns’ associations of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital, and Sir Salimullah Medical College were present at the meeting, said UNB.

Prothom Alo’s Bogra correspondent reported that all of the four interns who were suspended for beating up a relative of a patient are activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of ruling Awami League.

Md Kutub Uddin, a former vice president of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College unit, one of four suspended interns, has been working virtually as spokesperson of the agitating interns.

Another key figure was MA Al Mamun Rabbi, incumbent president of BCL’s medical college unit. Two more are Md Ashiquzzaman Asif, BCL vice president, and Nurjahan Binte Islam, an activist of BCL.

Nurjahan was at the central point of the controversy surrounding the beating up of the relative of a patient.

Interns at SZMC began work stoppage on Thursday protesting at a health ministry directive that suspended the fopur four interns.

Later, interns at several medical colleges and hospitals in Rajshahi, Barisal, Mymensingh and Sylhet expressed solidarity with the strike and went on work stoppage, causing immense sufferings to patients.

Alauddin Sarkar, 60, of Konagati in Sirajganj, was admitted to the hospital at midnight. Soon after his admission, Alauddin’s son Rauf locked into an altercation with an intern over switching on a fan.

At one stage of their argument, the intern called his colleagues, took Rauf to a separate room and beat him up. Later, the agitators locked the emergency unit of the hospital and went on an indefinite strike, citing that they were insulted by Alauddin’s relatives.

A probe body led by additional secretary Habibur Rahman was formed to investigate the incident on 23 February and the offenders were punished following the submission of the probe report.
