Men to serve jail for dowry in Gaibandha
15 December 2015, Nirapad News: A court on Monday convicted a man and sentenced him to one and a half years’ imprisonment in a case filed for dowry in 2013.
The convict was identified as M Mashiur Rahman Khan, 31, son of M Mahshin Ali Khan, a resident of Bara Daudpur village in Shadullahpur upazila.
The court also fined him Tk 2,000, in default, to serve 15 days more imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, Mashiur had married Nur Hawa Begum, daughter of Nurul Islam of Kanchibari village in Sundarganj upzaila of the district, in 2011.
Mashiur had been demanding dowry from his in laws’ house and used to torture his wife Hawa over the issue since their marriage.
As Hawa refused to give dowry, Mashiur sent her to her father’s house.
Later, in 2013, Hawa Begum filed a case with the Judicial Magistrate’s Court , Gaibandha under the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1980.
After examining all documents and witnesses, Judge of Shadullahpur Senior Judicial Magistrate Court-1 M Maniruzzaman Shikdar handed down the verdict.
