Mobile phone operators make accord with EC for information
04 November 2015,Nirapad News: The Election Commission (EC) will help the country’s mobile phone operators to verify their (operators) subscribers information through using its data base of national identity.
Six mobile phone operators – Teletalk, Grameenphone, Banglalink, Rabi, Citycell and Airtel signed separate bilateral agreements with the EC at the commission’s National Identity (NID) wing at Agargaon here, NID director Syed M Musa told BSS.
Under the agreement, the operators can get online verification service from the EC to examine their subscribers’ information during the process of re-registration of the SIM cards.
Recently, the government took initiative to carry out re-registration of SIM cards of mobile subscribers in the wake of criminal activities through unregistered mobile phone numbers. “Today’s agreement is part of this initiative,” Musa said.
The EC will charge Taka 2 to operators for verifying information of each phone subscribers. Besides, each operator will give Taka five lakh to the EC as signing money.
Currently, the EC got information of 9.62 crore voters, at age of 18 and above. So far, Bangladesh Bank, National Board of Revenue and Passport Department and two other private banks took online verification service from the EC.
