More transparency in internal wheat procurement underscored
05 November 2015, Nirapad News: Farmers at a public hearing today called upon the government for taking more steps to ensure complete transparency in the internal wheat procurement process to benefit them in getting fair price of the cereal crop.
Thakurgaon Office of RDRS Bangladesh, a reputed NGO, organised the public hearing on ‘Internal Wheat Procurement Programme’ at Balia Union Samaj Kallyan Federation office premises under Sadar upazila in the district.
The NGO organised the event under its ongoing five-year term ‘Improving Food Security Governance in South & Southeast Asia through Strengthened Participation of Organisations of Marginalised Farmers’ Regional Project.’
The regional project is being implemented in Bangladesh, Nepal, India and Myanmar to improve livelihood of 10.20 lakh marginalised households, including ethnic communities, with financial assistance of the European Union and Dan Church Aid.
A total of 260 farmers, including 140 males and 120 females, of the area participated in the public hearing with Chairman of Balia Union Samaj Kallyan Federation Al Amin in the chair.
Sadar Upazila Agriculture Officer Anisur Rahman attended the occasion as the chief guest while Chairman of local Balia union parishad Alhaj Afaz Uddin addressed as the special guest.
Project Manager of Regional Food Security Governance Project of RDRS Bangladesh for Thakurgaon Mahfuz Alam narrated objectives of the public hearing and moderated it.
Taking part in the open discussion, the farmers narrated various shortcomings in the implementation process of the internal wheat procurement programme.
The chief guest assured the farmers that more steps would be taken to make the internal wheat procurement programme a complete success through ensuring its benefits for the real farmers from the next season.
