Municipal Polls, EC schedule likely on November 11 or 12

07 November 2015, Nirapad News: The Election Commission (EC) may announce schedule for countrywide municipal polls on Wednesday or Thursday, sources said.
The EC sent the municipality election code of conduct and election operation regulations to the Law Ministry for vetting on Thursday.
The EC is hopeful that the Ministry may vet those by Sunday or Monday.
In this case, the EC has a plan to issue the gazette notification on Tuesday and declare the schedule on Wednesday or Thursday to hold the election by December 24.
According to the fresh regulations, the candidates of the registered political parties will compete with the party symbols.
On the other hand, the EC has set aside 12 symbols for independent mayor candidates.
They are iron, computer, carom board, spoon, jug, tie, coconut tree, fishhook, mobile phone, rail engine, cloth hanger and helmet.
Some 12 symbols for independent councillor candidates and 10 for reserved seats have also been fixed for allocation.
Earlier on 12 October, the Cabinet approved the draft seeking amendments to four laws and one ordinance, aiming to hold local government polls on partisan basis.
The four other amendment bills are ‘Local Government (Union Parisad) (amendment) Bill, 2015’, ‘Upazila Parisad (amendment) Bill, 2015’, ‘Zilla Parisad (amendment) Bill, 2015′ and Local Government (City Corporation) (amendment) Bill, 2015’.
President Abdul Hamid promulgated the ‘Local Government (Pourashava) (amendment), Ordinance, 2015’ on Monday, paving the way for holding the municipality polls on party line.
According to the Election Commission, there are 323 municipalities, 488 upazilas, 4,500 union parisads and 11 city corporations in the country.
