National anthem as cell ringtone: Supreme Court upholds HC verdict
12 May 2015, Nirapad News: The Supreme Court on Monday upheld a High Court verdict that declared illegal the use of national anthem as ringtone or welcome tune on mobile phones.
A three-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, came up with the order after dismissing two appeals filed by mobile operators Banglalink and Grameenphone challenging the HC verdict.
At the same time, the SC commuted the HC declared fine amount from Tk 50 lakhs to Tk 30 lakhs.
On August 5, 2010, the High Court declared illegal the use of Bangladesh national anthem (Amar Sonar Bangla ami tomay bhalobasi) as ringtone on cell phones and charging subscribers money for this service.
The court, also fined three operators-Grameenphone, Banglalink and Robi– Tk 50 lakhs each for using the national anthem for business purpose.
