New Zealand wins World Cup opener by 98 runs against Sri Lanka
Christchurch, Nirapad News : New Zealand off to a winning start in World Cup 2015 as they have defeated Sri Lanka by a big margin of 98 runs in first match of the tournament played at Hagley Oval.
Sri Lankan were all out on 233 runs chasing the huge total of 331 runs. Lankan side despite having a tremendous start unable to cross the winning line.
Lahuri Thirimanne was the top scorer for the Asian side as he made 65 with skipper following his inning made 46 runs.
Tim Southee , Trent Boult, Adam Milne and Daniel Vittori picked up two wickets each for New Zealand.
Lankan won the toss and decided to bowl first which turns out to be disaster for their bowlers as they had been hammered for 331 runs in 50 over by the Black Caps.
New Zealand skipper Brandon McCullm smashed 65 just facing 49 deliveries with Corey Anderson smoked 75 runs at the end of inning to guide the total to 331 on loss of 6 wickets.
Surangan Lakmal and Jeeven Mendis picked up two wickets each for Sri Lanka.
