Nizami appeal hearing begins
09 Septembar 2015, Nirapad News: The Appellate Division on Wednesday started hearing the appeal petition filed by death row convict Jamaat leader Matiur Rahman Nizami for the crimes against humanity during the country’s war of indfependence in 1971.
Earlier in the day, a four-member bench, led by Chief Justice (CJ) Surendra Kumar Sinha, rejected time petition filed by defense lawyers and ordered to begin hearing the appeal.
Three other members are, Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana, Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and Justice Hasan Foyez Siddique.
On February 24 in 2015, the Appellate Division ordered the prosecution and defendant to submit Nizami’s appeal synopsis by two weeks.
Later, both submitted Nizami’s appeal synopsis before the apex court.
On August 18, Zainul Abedin Tuhin ‘Advocate on Record’ sought two-week time after vacation of the apex court September 18-October 31.
Earlier on October 29 in 2014, the 3-member war crimes tribunal sentenced Nizami to death on charges of numbers 2, 4, 6, 16 and life-term imprisonment on 1, 3, 7 and 8 numbers of charges.
On November 23, war crimes convict Motiur Rahman Nizami challenged death penalty handed down by International Crimes Tribunal-1 for crimes against humanity during liberation war in 1971.
Defense lawyer submitted an appeal of 6,252 pages to Supreme Court Appellate Division showing 168 causes and sought acquittal from the charges.
