The High Court on Wednesday commented that vehicles without updated fitness certificates cannot run on the roads.

The bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam made the comment after Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) submitted a report in this connection.

Advocate Rafiul Islam stood for BRTA while Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik and Assistant Attorney General Helena Begum China represented the state.

Rafiul said the bench remarked that vehicles cannot run on the roads without updated fitness certificates. The court also fixed Sunday to delivery its order.

On October 23 last year, the court ordered the authorities concerned to refrain from selling oil and gas to vehicles whose fitness certificates have not been renewed.

On July 23 that year, the court asked BRTA to renew fitness certificates of unfit vehicles within two months – between August 1 and September 30. There were around half a million unfit vehicles till that date.

According to BRTA, 165,764 vehicles updated fitness certificates across the country within the given time.
