One killed in clash over sand lifting in Sirajganj

02 February 2015, Nirapad News: A man was killed and 17 others were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers over sand lifting from the Jamuna River in Sharghat area of Sirajganj municipality on Monday.

The deceased was identified as Babu Islam, 32, a truck driver and son of Akbar Ali, a resident of Putiabari.

Officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station Habibul Islam said there had been a longstanding dispute between Ansar group of Hosenpur and Bellal group of Putiabari over extraction of sand from the Jamuna.

On Monday, over the issue, the two groups locked into a clash leaving Babu dead on the spot.

On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

The body was sent to Sadar Hospital morgue.
