Pace of rural development in Mymensingh, Rangpur, Rajshahi Divisions to be accelerated
24 December 2017, Nirapad News: The government has planned to launch a big programme to accelerate the pace of rural infrastructure development in the country’s three divisions with an estimated cost of Taka 8,148.82 crore to infuse dynamism in farm and non-farm activities there and thus create employment opportunities.
“Rural development operations will be conducted in three divisions — Rangpur, Mymensingh and Rajshahi — through implementing three separate projects,” said a senior official of the Ministry of Planning.
The official told BSS that these three big projects are likely to be placed before the next meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) scheduled for Tuesday. Prime Minister and ECNEC Chairperson Sheikh Hasina will preside over the meeting.
He said once these projects are approved and implemented in due time, then the farm and non-farm activities in those areas would get a boost, marketing of farm products will be facilitated while the overall poverty trend in those areas would be reduced.
He said the “Mymensingh region rural infrastructure development” project will be implemented by June, 2022 at an estimated cost of Taka 3,183.56 crore to be entirely borne from the state exchequer.
The Planning Commission official said the “Rangpur Division rural infrastructure development-2nd phase” project will be implemented by June, 2022 at an estimated cost of Taka 2,884.86 crore also to be borne from the state exchequer.
The other project titled “Rajshahi Division (except Sirajganj district) rural infrastructure development” will be implemented by June, 2022 at an estimated cost of Tk 2,080.40 crore of which the entire fund will come from the GoB portion.
Another official at the Planning Commission told the national news agency that the Mymensingh region rural infrastructure development project will cover 60 upazilas of Mymensingh, Tangail, Jamalpur, Sherpur, Kishoreganj, and Netrakona districts.
The main project operations in this region will be some 302.60 kilometer upazila road development, some 783.80 kilometer union road development, some 1299 kilometer village road development alongside unleashing development of submergible village, union and upazila roads.
Besides, bridges will be constructed over the upazila, union and village roads side by side road maintenance works will be carried out.
The Rangpur Division rural infrastructure development project will cover some 58 upazilas of Panchagarh, Thakurgaon, Dinajpur, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Gaibandha districts.
The main activities under this project will be development of some 46 rural hat-bazaars, some 250 kilometer upazila road development, some 641.50 kilometer union road development, alongside development of village road A, village road B, construction of bridges and culverts, road widening and maintenance and tree plantation.
The Rajshahi Division rural infrastructure development project will cover some 58 upazilas of Pabna, Rajshahi, Natore, Naogaon, Chapainawabganj, Bogra and Joypurhat districts.
The main operations under this project include some 172.09 kilometer upazila road development, some 367.76 kilometer union road development, some 1156 kilometer village road development, alongside construction of bridges over upazila, union and rural roads, road widening and road maintenance, construction of school connecting roads and bridges.
