Party- based local polls to take democracy to grassroots: LGRD minister
09 November 2015, Nirapad News: LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Engineer Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain today said the local body polls would be held on party basis with a view to taking democracy to the grassroots level.
“There are many instances of such polls in the world,” he said speaking as the chief guest at ‘BSRF Dialogue’ organized by Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF) at the media centre in Bangladesh Secretariat.
The minister said the country’s cooperatives laws have some weaknesses.
These laws would have to be amended to expedite cooperatives movement in the country, he added.
Local Government and Cooperatives Secretary MA Quader Sarkar, Local Government Secretary M Abdul Malek were present at the meeting. BSRF President journalist Shyamol Sarkar presided over the meeting while General Secretary journalist Siddiqur Rahman presented the biography of the minister.
The minister said his ministry supplies water in rural areas. Currently, it is giving importance to surface water in this regard.
Referring to siltation of rivers in the country, Engineer Mosharraf Hossain said directives have been issued for capital dredging of rivers. Besides, the rural canals, ponds and water bodies would be re-excavated, he added.
He said the rural roads would be metalized in next three years.
He said cows would be imported from abroad and Milk Vita would be expanded.
District council polls might be held soon, as the issue is being discussed within the government, he added.
