PM sends message to US President Obama condoling Muhammad Ali’s death

5 June 2016, Nirapad News: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today sent a message to US President Barak Obama condoling boxing legend Muhammad Ali expressing her profound shock at his demise.

“I am profoundly saddened at the unfortunate demise of the US and global boxing legend Muhammad Ali (Inna lillahi wa inna ilahi rajiun) last night, who was also an honorary citizen of Bangladesh,” a foreign ministry statement quoted her as saying in the message sent from Jeddah as the Bangladesh premier is currently staying in Saudi Arabia on an official visit.

She said “on behalf of the people and Bangladesh government, I convey our deepest condolence to you (Obama) and through you to the members of the bereaved family and to the people of the United States”.

Calling Ali “one of the greatest sports icons of all time” she said he “has long been a household name in Bangladesh and is regarded with great respect and passion by its people for his extraordinary talent and skills in boxing, and also for his bold voice to uphold the dignity of all human beings and challenge all wrongs”.

“The greatest boxer in the history was a bridge between our two friendly countries and would remain so for generations to come. The people of Bangladesh would always remember their brother, Muhammad Ali, with love and reverence,” the premier said.

Sheikh Hasina also prayed for the salvation of the departed soul and
conveyed her heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family members.
