Police abusing power excessively: NHRC
05 February 2015, Nirapad News: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) chairman Dr Mizanur Rahman remarked that police is abusing power excessively.
He made this comment to the media after visiting Dhaka Medical College and Hospital burn unit in city on Thursday (February 4) following the death of a vendor Babul Matubbor (45).
The vendor was burnt dead in city’s Mirpur area as he declined to pay extortion to the police.
The NHRC boss said, ‘Misuse of police power has crossed its boundary. We should identify them’.
According to them, police is showing negligence in discharging their duties.
“Home minister and police high-ups should be informed about these incidents. If they do not take measures then NHRC will go to the higher court.”
‘No extortionist or terrorist went to Babul Matubbor to get money,’ he said, ‘they were policemen and their associates. They are responsible for this incident’.
Earlier on Wednesday night (February 3), a vendor Babul was severely burnt as the stove of his makeshift shop got burst out due to police attack.
Later on Thursday, he succumbed to his injuries at DMCH.
DMCH on-duty doctor Zahirul Islam told banglanews that Babul was 95% burnt.
