Police announce bounty of Taka 20 lakh for militants Tamim, Zia each
3 August 2016, Nirapad News: Police on Tuesday announced bounty leading to arrests of a Canadian Bangladeshi and a renegade army officer identifying them as leaders of two militant outfits, one being responsible for the two recent terrorist attacks.
“The law enforcement and intelligence agencies are trying to arrest Tamim Chowdhury and (sacked and fugitive) major Zia (Ziaul Haque), we seek everyone’s cooperation in this regard,” Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque told a media briefing at police headquarters.
He added that anyone who could provide information leading to their arrests would be rewarded with a cash amount of Taka 20 lakh while the informants’ identity would be kept secret.
The police chief named Bangladeshi Canadian Chowdhury as the mastermind of the July 1 terrorist attack on Holey Artisan restaurant and the subsequent assault on the Eid congregation at Sholakia six days later.
Police earlier identified Chowdhury as the leader of “reconstituted” Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) or Neo JMB and the deserter military officer as main organizer of Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) which off late appeared as Ansar Al Bangladesh.
Hoque said one of the rescued 13 hostages of July 1 attack, Hasnat Karim was still under security vigilance for suspected links to the perpetrators of the attack.
The police chief said the misguided youths would be given a chance to be rectified if they decided to return to normal life but he urged parents and guardians to keep a closer eye on their children to protect them from being exposed to militant recruiters.
“If anybody (militant) wants to return the normal life, law enforcement agencies and authorities concerned would provide necessary help,” Hoque said.
Senior police officials including Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Benazir Ahmed and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah were also present at the press conference.
