Pourashava polls under laws existing during schedule announcement: CEC
03 November 2015,Nirapad News: Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad on Monday said the upcoming countrywide municipal elections will be held as per the laws that will exist during the announcement of the polls schedule.
“It depends on the laws which exist during the announcement of schedule whether the polls will be held in party line or not,” he
told reporters replying to a question after a views-exchange meeting at the Circuit House auditorium in Chittagong city.
The Election Commission arranged the function to exchange views with the mayor and councillors of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) over the distribution of errorless smart national identity cards.
The CEC said the duties of the Election Commission are clearly defined by the Constitution and electoral laws. “Parliament enacts
laws and we arrange elections following the laws.”
Noting that the five-year tenure of municipality starts with the first sitting of the elected representatives, he said the commission
has legal obligation to arrange polls to municipality within 90 days before the tenure ends. Elections to all municipalities will not be
held on a single day, he added.
Kazi Rakibuddin said the commission is prepared to arrange the municipal polls in December on condition of completion of their tenures.
About the Rohingya voters, the CEC said he has asked the local election officials to be sincere so that no one other than valid citizens can be enrolled as voters. Besides, the draft updated voter list will be published on January 2 next to receive and dispose of complaints on the update, if any, he said.
Election Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mobarak, CCC Mayor AJM Nasir, EC Secretary Sirazul Islam, Divisional Commissioner of Chittagong Mohammad Abdullah, Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong Mezbah Uddin, Additional Commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police AKM Shahidur Rahman, and Chittagong regional election officer Md Abdul Baten were present.
