President, PM urge all to be prudent in power & energy use

10 December 2015, Nirapad News: President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has issued separate messages on the occasion of National Power Week-2015 and called upon all to be prudent in using power and energy.
They wished success of all programs of the National Power Week-2015.
The President, in his message, hoped that observance of the week would encourage all to be prudent in using electricity considering the future energy security.
He said the present government has given priority to power sector and undertaken programmes for setting up power stations and distribution and transmission of electricity. Therefore, the country’s power generation capacity has increased to 11,277 megawatts, he added.
Initiatives have also been taken to import power from India and other SAARC countries, he said.
The Present hoped that development of power and energy sector would further strengthen the national economy and play an important role in building a digital Bangladesh.
In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said power and energy are the driving force of development.
The greatest Bangalee of all time Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had had given priority to power, energy and mineral resources for infrastructure and socioeconomic development, she recalled.
Sheikh Hasina said the power sector was in a bad shape when Awami League assumed office in 2009.
Then her government that took short, midterm and long-term programmes to increase power generation, she said, adding that the country’s power generation capacity increased to 14,077MW (including captive).
The Prime minister hoped that the country’s power generation capacity would increase to 24,000MW in 2021 and 41,000MW in 2030.
As part of regional cooperation, efforts are going on to import electricity from India, Nepal and Bhutan, she said and added that the average daily generation of gas in January 2009 was 1744 million cubic feet, which has currently increased to 2730 cft.
The Prime Minister said investment of huge money is required for the development of power and energy sector.
She urged all to be restrained and prudent in the use of power and energy.
“It is the responsibility of all to ensure energy security for the future generation,” she said.
