Prime Minister proposes Annisul Huq for Dhaka North mayoral race
16 February 2015, Nirapd News: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has proposed former FBCCI president Annisul Huq to run for mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) election on behalf of Awami League.
The Prime Minister came up with the proposal at the regular cabinet meeting on Monday.
Two ministers who attended the meeting confirmed of Annisul’s likely candidature seeking anonymity.
LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam said “We have preparation to hold elections to both the city corporation polls – Dhaka North and Dhaka South”.
In 2011, the government split the Dhaka City Corporation into two DCC North and DCC South. Since then, an administrator was appointed for each of the two new corporations to run the activities till those are constituted through elections.
Sadeque Hossain Khoka was the last Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) Mayor elected in 2002. Khoka served his second term after completing their five-year tenure in May 2007.
Polls could not be held in 2007 due to a state of emergency and an incomplete voter list.
