22 April 2018, Nirapad News: Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq today said his ministry has preparations to place a proposal in the next (budget) session of the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) to amend the Road Transport Act 2017 to prevent road accidents.

“After the approval of the draft of the act, it’s now in the vetting stage. As this act is a very important one, we are holding discussions with all the stakeholders…We are trying to make a time-befitting law and that is why it is taking a little time,” he said, talking to newsmen after inaugurating a training course for district and session judges and equivalent officials at Judicial Administration Training Institute (JATI) in the capital.

“We have to concentrate on three to four aspects to check road accidents. Those are: training of the drivers, attaining driving license, fitness of vehicles and the condition of roads,” the minister said.

Efforts are being made to address all the matters related to road transport through this act, he added.

“I just want to say that when a matter of road accident would come before the courts, we will try to ensure proper punishment so that awareness is created and the owners and drivers of the vehicles can understand that they will not be able to go unpunished,” he said.

Replying a question on extradition of BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman from London, the law minister said discussions are going on regarding this matter.

“The kind of discussion required to bring back such a convict, is going on and we are noticing positive signals. I would not say the discussion is fruitful unless and until he is extradited,” Anisul said.

Presided over by JATI Director General Justice Khandaker Musa Khaled, the inauguration ceremony was also addressed by Law Secretary Abu Saleh Sheikh Md Zahirul Haque.
