Prospects in fisheries sector should be tapped into quickly and effectively: PM
01 April 2015, Nirapad News: Blue Economy should be tapped quickly and effectively for country’s development says Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today. She also said that Bangladesh’s victory over maritime boundary has created a vast prospect for country’s this sector.
In this regard she asked for creating competent manpower for overall development of the fishery sector and taking rapid and effective steps for harvesting fishery resources in the deep sea.
Sheikh Hasina said this in the third meeting the National Committee on Fisheries and Shrimp at her office here today.
Briefing reporters after the meeting PM’s Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhuri said the Prime Minister, also the chairperson of the committee, laid importance on development of necessary infrastructure for preservation and growth of the fisheries sector.
She asked the officials to take measures for protection of the sanctuary of the gravid fishes of ‘Ruhi’ species at Halda River. She also called for sustainable production of shrimp through introducing environment friendly and improved cultivation system.
Presidents of Frozen Food Export Association, Bangladesh Fish and Shrimp Foundation, National Shrimp Cultivation Association, Bangladesh Marine Fisheries Association were also present.
The Prime Minister asked the officials to provide incentive to the concerned quality control officials, widen the area of National Residue Control Plan (NRCP) and creating necessary manpower to ensure safe supply of fisheries and enhance capacity of the quality control and fish processing for its good marketing at home and abroad.
Asking the officials to create a “Hilsha Development Trust Fund” for sustainable conservation of Hilsha fishes and its management she said cardholder fry catchers would be given food support from the fund.
She asked the officials of the Water Resources Ministry to take steps for protecting the Andarmanik Channel, Dhalchar Channel, Charbiswas Channel, Shahbajpur Channel, Tentulia River and other migratory routes of Hilsha as well as recovery of the living grounds of Hilsha through capital dredging of the rivers and canals.
Sheikh Hasina asked for taking steps for arrangement of alternative employment for poor fishermen aimed at stopping collection of fries of shrimp and other species from natural sources.
