Renowned Bollywood actor Rishi Kapoor dies

Renowned Bollywood actor Rishi Kapoor died at a hospital in Mumbai on Thursday after a two-year battle with cancer.

Family members said the 67-year-old breathed his last in the morning at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital.

He ‘remained jovial and determined to live to the fullest during his two-year battle with cancer, his family said in a message.

He would like to be remembered with a smile and not with tears, it added.

Rishi was suffering from cancer since 2018 and underwent chemotherapy in New York. He returned home in September 2019 after ‘11 months, 11 days of treatment’.

He is survived by wife Neetu Kapoor, son Ranbir Kapoor and daughter Riddhima Kapoor Sahni.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the tributes on Twitter.

“Multifaceted, endearing and lively…this was Rishi Kapoor Ji. He was a powerhouse of talent. I will always recall our interactions, even on social media. He was passionate about films and India’s progress. Anguished by his demise. Condolences to his family and fans. Om Shanti,” Modi wrote.

Amitabh Bachchan, a friend and colleague of the actor, mourned the passing away of Rishi.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi described Rishi Kapoor as a wonderful actor, with a huge fan following across generations. “He will be greatly missed. My condolences to his family, friends & fans all over the world, at this time of grief,” Rahul tweeted.

Rishi was the son of the man India call the showman, Raj Kapoor, and grandson of Prithviraj Kapoor. He was the second son of Raj and the sibling of Randhir, Ritu Nanda, Rima Jain and Rajeev Kapoor.

He debuted in the film industry as a child actor in Mera Naam Joker (1970) that was produced by his father. He won a Filmfare Award for his acting.

His first role as an adult came in the iconic Bobby (1973) opposite Dimple Kapadia. He also received the Filmfare Best Actor Award in 1974 for the film.

Between 1973 and 2000, he played the romantic lead in 92 films, and was awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. He appeared opposite his future wife Neetu Singh in 12 films.

He acted in a number of hit films such as Amar Akbar Anthony, Laila Majnu, Rafoo Chakkar, Sargam, Karz, Bol Radha Bol and others. Besides, he was also seen in films such as Kapoor and Sons, D-Day, Mulk and 102 Not Out.

The film in which he acted for the last time is “The Body”. He also announced his next project, a remake of Hollywood film The Intern, featuring Deepika Padukone.

His death, just a day after Irrfan Khan’s death, gave a deep shock to the Indians. Akshay Kumar termed it as a nightmare for Bollywood.

“It seems like we’re in the midst of a nightmare…just heard the depressing news of #RishiKapoor ji passing away, it’s heartbreaking. He was a legend, a great co-star and a good friend of the family. My thoughts and prayers with his family.”

Rishi Kapoor was prolific on Twitter and was known for frequently commenting on controversial issues and sometimes getting into heated exchanges with people.

His last tweet was an appeal to people not to attack medical staff at the frontlines of the fight against coronavirus, saying, “we have to win this war together”.
