SC upholds order for recognizing 2,367 guerilla fighters as Freedom Fighters

3 January 2017, Nirapad News: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today upheld a High Court order that had asked the government to recognize 2,367 members of guerilla force, those took part in War of Liberation as Freedom Fighters.

A four-member Appellate Division panel headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order, dismissing a leave to appeal petition filed by the state against that High Court order.

Earlier on September 8, 2016, the High Court had ordered the government to recognize these 2,367 guerilla fighters from National Awami Party (NAP), Communist Party and Chhatra Union as Freedom Fighters and to give proper status, dignity and facilities to them.

The government on July 22, 2013, published a gazette notification, recognizing those 2,367 guerrillas as Freedom Fighters. Later on October 29, 2014, the government revoked that gazette.

Deputy Commander of that guerrilla force, Pankaj Bhattacharya on December 11, 2014, filed a writ with the High Court, challenging the government order on cancelling the Freedom Fighter status for the guerrillas.
